THE SPICE ISLANDS

Overview : Kimberley : Spice Islands : Timetable : Vessel Specifications : Territorian Wet Season Specials

The Malukus

The Malukus has an area, including sea, of 850,000 sq km consisting of 1027 islands.

The major islands of this group encompass Halmahera in the north, Banda Islands, Ceram, Kai and Aru Islands to the south east, extending west to Tanimbars and Timor.

See Spice Island Map

These islands are historically significant as they were the fabled Spice Islands. Ancient traders from all over the world searched for the source of Clove, Nutmeg and Mace, which grew only here.

When they discovered these islands they massacred local tribes and then fought each other in order to monopolise the trade.

These islands are now known as the forgotten islands as tourists seldom visit this area as it is isolated from traditional tourist hamlets especially over the last 30 years due to the politics of Timor and the Muslim / Christian conflict of North Maluku.

The seasons vary immensely among these islands but it is recognized that the dry monsoon between October and April is the best time to visit.

Trekking across mountainous interiors, sea kayaking around deserted beaches, diving on pristine coral gardens, visiting ancient forts, interacting with local villages, whatever your pursuit, Maluku will hold something special for you.

Nusa Tengarra

Indonesia’s eastern islands extending from Timor to Lombok are known as Nusa Tengarra, comprising of Lombok, Sumbawa, Sumba, Flores, Komodo, Alor and West Timor.

This part of Indonesia is a lot drier than the western region. The wet season begins inDecember extending to March then the dry south east trade winds begin.

These islands offer the voyager a richness in culture, flora and fauna, world class surfing, diving and amazing sights that will rival anything in South East Asia.
