Darwin Fishing Seasons: What We Target Month by Month

People ask us where the fish are. Up here the better question is when. The Top End runs on two clocks, the tide and the season, and every charter we run is planned around both. Here is an honest look at what we target through the year out of Darwin, and when to book if you are chasing something in particular.

The Dry: May to September

Cool mornings, glassed out seas and week after week of blue sky. This is prime offshore weather. We run wide for Spanish mackerel, longtail tuna and queenfish, and work the reef for golden snapper, black jewfish, coral trout and red emperor. If you want a big esky of quality eating fish, this is your window, and it is also when the sea breeze behaves itself for anyone prone to going green.

The Build-up: September to December

The humidity climbs, the storms start stacking up on the horizon, and the fish switch on before the rain arrives. Big barra feed hard ahead of the wet, the harbour fires for golden snapper and black jewfish on the neap tides, and mangrove jack get downright aggressive in the creeks. Plenty of locals will tell you the build-up is the best fishing of the year, and they are mostly right. It is hot, so we fish early and let the tide set the day.

The build-up is also when we run our multi day fishing safaris along the West Arnhem Land coast. A mothership, a tender, empty beaches and water that rarely sees a lure. It is the most remote charter fishing in the country, and cabins are limited each season.

The Wet and the Run-off: January to April

The rain fills the floodplains, and when that water starts draining back into the rivers the famous run-off begins. Bait pours off the flats, the barra sit on the colour lines and creek mouths to ambush it, and the Top End produces the barramundi fishing it is known for. February to April is the peak. Threadfin salmon turn up in the mix, and with Million Dollar Fish season running through the summer months there is always a tagged barra worth serious money swimming around Darwin.

Any month of the year: the harbour

Darwin Harbour is the safety net. It is sheltered, it is minutes from the wharf, and it holds fish every month of the year: golden snapper, black jewfish, mangrove jack, estuary cod, queenfish, trevally and blue salmon. When the weather turns, or you have only got half a day, the harbour delivers.

So when should you book?

Chasing barra, book October to May, and let us time it to the run-off if your dates are flexible. After reef fish and mackerel, the dry is your friend. Want the full remote experience, the safaris run in the build-up window and they are the first thing to sell out. And if you simply want to bend a rod and take home a feed of fresh fish, any month works. We pick the target to suit the season, not the other way around.
