Sustainability / Climate / Emissions Reduction Plan

At Cape Adieu Harbour Cruises, we believe that enjoying the Top End’s natural beauty goes hand in hand with protecting it. As custodians of Darwin Harbour and the northern coastline, we are committed to reducing our environmental footprint and ensuring that our operations contribute to a sustainable future for Northern Territory tourism.

Our Sustainability and Climate Action Plan outlines practical steps we are taking today, as well as long-term goals to support emissions reduction, responsible resource management, and climate adaptation.

Fuel Efficiency & Emissions Reduction

We are continually working to improve the efficiency of our vessel operations. This includes:

  • Investing in efficient marine engines and technologies.

  • Maintaining strict servicing schedules to keep our engines performing at their best.

  • Careful voyage planning to minimise unnecessary fuel burn and emissions.

  • Exploring future opportunities in hybrid and low emission technologies.

Waste Management

The health of our oceans is central to everything we do. We have introduced policies to:

  • Eliminate single-use plastics wherever possible.

  • Separate, recycle, and responsibly dispose of waste both onboard and onshore.

  • Comply fully with marine pollution prevention regulations to ensure nothing harmful enters the sea.

  • Educate crew and guests on the importance of reducing marine waste.

Local & Sustainable Supply Chains

We are proud to work with local NT businesses and producers to reduce transport emissions and support the regional economy. Our approach includes:

  • Prioritising sustainably & locally sourced produce and seafood.

  • Highlighting local flavours and stories through the food and beverage experiences we offer onboard.

Climate Adaptation

Operating in the tropics means being prepared for changing weather patterns and the long-term impacts of climate change. We are taking steps to:

  • Build resilience into our operations by planning for extreme weather events.

  • Review and adjust our cruising schedules and infrastructure to respond to environmental conditions.

  • Work with industry and community partners to identify sustainable solutions for the future.

Education & Awareness

Sustainability is not just about operations, it’s also about people. We are committed to:

  • Training our crew in sustainability best practices and marine protection.

  • Sharing our journey with guests, helping them understand how small actions can make a big difference.

  • Supporting community initiatives that protect and promote the Top End’s unique natural and cultural environment.
